Transcript
At the end of September, Democratic Senate candidate from Texas James Talarico fell ill with the flu. Having a compromised immune system due to type 1 diabetes meant he had to take an extended time away from the campaign trail to recover, appearing by video to a couple campaign obligations including one on September 30th and confirming he had the flu. On October 7th at a rally in San Antonio, Trump claimed Talarico had to take time off because he’s vegan and was forced to eat meat so he was throwing up all over the place. Leader of the free world. That same day, October 7th, a random user on twitter claimed he had heard from “someone with inside knowledge” that Talarico had to leave the campaign trail because of a mental health crisis. The next day, October 8th, Steve Banon had a woman on his War Room podcast named Caroline Wren, whose twitter bio says she’s a fundraiser and a Trump fan, I guess Steve Banon will have just about anyone on the War Room, and Caroline claimed Talarico had checked himself into a mental institution. She and others repeated these claims across twitter. Elon Musk saw this and chimed in, saying the Talarico campaign was hiding something major from the voters. The conspiracy spread across twitter, across telegram chats, and even made its way to spanish-language twitter, where users were claiming that not only was he having a mental health crisis he had actually attempted suicide. The english language right wing grifters were also latching on. A twitter account called TickleTexts, unclear if human, the profile picture is clearly AI generated and she regularly makes the claim that she lives in Texas but is from South Africa and is therefore African American just like Elon Musk, anyway this account made the claim that Talarico was at the Lindner Center for Hope in Ohio, then Caroline Wren took a screen shot of a private flight between Ohio and Austin alleging that that confirms he went to Ohio and came back even though it’s unclear who was even on that flight and was probably just a random flight that happened to line up loosely with the conspiracy. On October 11th, right wing grifter Ryan Amacher tweeted what he alleged to be a recording of a call he made to the Lindner Center of Hope, in which lied about who he was to the purported Lindner employee, and attempted to gain access to confidential patient information. That employee said there was no one there under the name of Talarico and then, at the end, said he checked out less than 24 hours before. It’s unclear if that conversation was real, or was edited, Ryan Amacher seems to make a habit of posting AI-generated content on his socials, along with other openly pro-Nazi, antisemitic, anti black racism, and yes of course he worked for the 2024 Trump campaign. Ryan even pitched the story of the Lindner call to a few right wing outlets like the Daily Wire and even they were like eh this doesn’t hold up to our journalistic integrity standards, yikes, there’s also video evidence of Talarico making appearances at the Austin City Limits music festival and a Kasey Musgraves concert on the nights he was supposedly checked into and discharged from a mental health facility in Ohio. Lindner Center for Hope issued an official statement confirming James Talarico had never been a patient there and James Talarico himself confirmed he’d never even been to Ohio before. The incident is just one example of flash in the pan hoaxes and disinformation campaigns that have become run of the mill in US elections that take up air space alongside true scandals that a decade ago would have taken up wall to wall coverage. Like did you even see that Trump has been accused by ANOTHER woman of rape? Can you IMAGINE if a woman had accused Obama of rape? Or George W Bush? Or any other president in US history–it would have been THE breaking news headline for weeks. In today’s news cycle it got one day of mixed coverage.
Newsguard’s 2026 Elections False Claims Tracker has identified 34 false claims that have been proliferated across 330 websites and accounts. Nearly half the hoaxes have been election fraud related, and 58% of the hoaxes proliferated on twitter. Those hoaxes include that a dominion voting systems whistleblower claimed US politicians were taking millions of dollars in bribes in exchange for rigging the election. The problem is that that never happened–there was no whistleblower to begin with. Or the false claim that Abdul El Sayed, a muslin and Michigan democratic senate candidate, called for Sharia law during a 2022 speech. He didn’t. Some rumors that swirled online weren’t outright hoaxes but were simply disinformation that took hold and spread–like the idea that Ukraine took out a couple data centers in Russia and it dramatically cut down on Russian bot activity on social media attempting to influence US elections. There is no evidence to support the idea that Russian-backed bot activity on social media changed after those data centers were bombed, and a graph widely circulated that people claimed showed that drop in social media bot activity was actually just showing the drop in the company’s overall bot activity online which largely consists of web crawlers commonly used by search engines to crawl websites for their search engine listings. But that last bit of disinformation indicates just how leery we all are of AI and outsiders attempting to influence these elections and how everyone is on heightened alert going into next week. But what’s real? What should we actually be worried about? And what can we expect going into next week’s elections?

Remember Cambridge Analytica? That scandal a decade ago wherein it was revealed that Facebook was partnering with Cambridge Analytica to utilize user data against our will to try to influence the 2016 election? After that scandal, social media companies around the world w’re like we’re soooo sorry we’ll definitely do better to enforce our own trust and safety regulations. And then they hired a bunch of people to try to make sure they weren’t breaking any laws and to do a better job of monitoring content online. The problem is that companies haaaate hiring people, and people who like running their mouths on the internet, telling lies, and just generally being dickheads, haaaaate having their ability to say whatever they want without consequence infringed upon. So some “free speech absolutists” got up in arms about the new censoring happening on these social media sites, and king dickhead Elon Musk went and bought twitter over it. Then Trump got re-elected and companies everywhere loosened their ties and were like thank god THAT charade is over and then laid off all their trust and safety people. For example, in 2023, YouTube stopped identifying and taking down videos that falsely claimed there was fraud in the 2020 election, saying that if they removed videos for spreading those lies it would “chill political speech.” But I don’t know, I’ve been doing all sorts of political speech on YouTube for six years and never once has the bar on claiming the 2020 election was rigged gotten in the way of my political speech.
And then AI went mainstream and guess what there was no one there to really give a shit as the bots started predictably pumping out disinformation campaigns to the masses. Because they all got fired. And last year Marco Rubio was like you know what’s a waste of taxpayer money? The state department’s Counter Foreign Information Manipulation and Interference Office, so he shut it down. And now because god forbid social media companies hire anyone new and cut into shareholder value, they’re like I KNOW let’s use AI to police the AI disinformation and what do you know now all of us live in hell.
And because of the sheer quantity of disinformation that’s now able to be produced for dirt cheap, anyone can just flood the zone and the AI that was put in place to protect us from AI lets enough slip through the cracks that it eventually reaches its target audience, which is like your dumbest uncle on Facebook. And once the lies get out its almost impossible to flood the zone with the actual truth, people believe what confirms their own biases, and even if you try to correct the lie it’s already morphed into something completely new and separate from the original lie. And it’s even worse on the Spanish-speaking areas of social media sites because by their own admission social media companies tend not to enforce their terms of service as strictly on Spanish language content especially now that they don’t have any real humans, let alone ones that can speak Spanish, engaging in any type of content moderation.
And so now these companies are relying on community notes as a form of user-generated content moderation, so it's a cop-out for them and it relies on the same idiots who are falling for the disinformation to now be able to magically have the media literacy to police the content being fed to them. And this is all made 10 times worse by the fact that the dumbest people on the internet are now running the US government and actively reposting AI-driven lies on official government social media channels.
For example, earlier this month a lie surfaced that alleged that an undocumented Nigerian immigrant was arrested for indecent exposure and had a bunch of canvassing materials in his car for Janelle Stelson, a democrat running for Pennsylvania’s 10th congressional district against incumbent Scott Perry, former chair of the house freedom caucus, which is one of the hotly contested seats in the midterms that could help flip the US house blue. Stelson’s campaign confirmed the man had never worked for them, they did not have any association with him, and they provided their payroll data which showed he was not listed anywhere as having ever been paid by her campaign. Still, the official press release from the Department of Homeland Security still makes these claims, has not been corrected, and the Deputy Director of ICE shared it on social media saying, quote “It’s unbelievable that Janelle Stelson would employ an illegal alien to work on a Congressional campaign, let alone a pervert who exposed himself in public.” Many experts are saying this post is a clear violation of the Hatch Act, which bars government employees from getting involved in elections and campaigns. But of course the lie picked up steam and got into the hands of more right wing grifters, including January 6ther Scott Presler, who posted a “breaking news” style video for his 2.4 million twitter followers, and the lie was further used in campaign ads produced by various PACs including this one from the Freedom Caucus Fund using a doctored image of the man in a Janelle Stelson tshirt, which came out 3 weeks ago and, according to YouTube, has over 1 million views and yet has zero comments, only 4 thumbs up, and the channel only has 365 subscribers, so I assume those views are bots? I’m unfamiliar with the process for purchasing bot views on YouTube but something’s not lining up.
Anyway, all of this has a lot of people questioning the role that AI is playing in our elections and what we can do about it. After digging into the issue I have a few takeaways. Are Russian bots trying to influence the outcome of this election? Probably–there’s evidence showing that they’ve done it before, there’s nothing to suggest that given the increased ease of access to AI that they wouldn’t be continuing to do so, but perhaps not in the way that you might think. People are increasingly skeptical of the things they’re seeing online because of the proliferation of AI and I think that’s a good thing–what you see isn’t necessarily what you should believe and that’s been true for a long time and is even more true now, so approaching anything you see online with a healthy dose of skepticism is probably good for your overall media literacy. People are also learning what AI looks like in video and images. Sometimes it is incredibly deceptive, but a lot of the time it’s pretty easy to spot. So while politicians on both sides are using AI to create images and video to poke at their opponents, I don’t think anyone was actually buying, for example, the videos of James Talarico doing interviews in a straight jacket. That’s more about spin and messaging than about actually trying to make people believe James Talarico did an interview while wearing a straight jacket–which he did not. And even AI-generated written content is pretty easy to spot, I think by now we have all visited websites or blogs that are clearly just keyword farms made to look like useful information so they pop up first on Google searches. AI becomes more nefarious when it is paired with things like real life far right grifters like Ryan Amachar and Scott Presler. An unclear number of their followers are bots, an unclear number of bots repost their content across the internet, and actors like them tend to share disinformation far and wide, including the use of AI-generated images and videos. And that level of resharing and followers lends a false sense of authority to a person who otherwise has no integrity to speak of, journalistic or otherwise. And this is an issue on both the left and the right and I know I’m an online news commentator as well so like there are shades of this. I personally avoid creating any content that claims to be reporting on “breaking news” and despite how popular people have become for creating this type of content, I also avoid doing short form content where I just announce some headline I read off the associated press as though it’s my own breaking report. I think the people who do that, no matter their political leanings, are capitalizing on the very human reaction to bad news, on the fact that humans will pay the closest attention to the thing that feels most threatening in the moment, which can then be exploited for ad revenue. And of course the right is far worse about this than the left but it means that anyone can pick up their phone and share the most inflammatory piece of fake news and seem to have some sort of authority on the matter without having anyone there to fact check them. Because again it’s being shared to like your absolute dumbest uncle on Facebook. So on the one hand I have hope that people are growing skeptical of what they see on the internet and aren’t believing everything that random people online are telling them without backing anything up with sources, which I always link in the description, by the way, but on the other hand I do think the world and especially the United States is made up of a lot of fucking stupid people who cannot be bothered and will just follow their lizard brain instinct without a single critical thinking skill inside their head. And AI makes that so palpably obvious, you cannot move through the world in 2026 without being faced with the stupidest piece of shit AI generated slop that someone thought was good enough to use for their food or event poster and didn’t think for one second that it might actually look bad or be obvious or make people not want to give them their business, because tons of people also are totally fine with a business using an AI slop poster, and spend their days using chatGPT as their personal therapist and to answer every question so they never have to use their brain again, and maybe we do deserve a mass extinction event, you know?
Sorry this has turned into an off topic AI rant but I’m so fucking sick of it and there’s such a huge chasm separating the people I know and interact with who are horrified by the general public’s use of AI and the environmental and societal devastation AI will bring and those who just use it as a search engine unquestioningly not one thought in their pretty little heads. Hello? It makes me feel like I’m living on a different planet or in like some twisted version of the Truman Show. And it isn’t completely ideologically driven, like there are some liberals and democrats who also use AI without a thought in their heads, and there are conservatives who are skeptical of data centers, but it does kind of seem like a symptom of the larger political divides in the US. Like the people most likely to fall for disinformation driven by AI are probably also the ones likely to fall for Trump’s lies, some of whom are now like wow I can’t believe he did the things he told me he was going to do or wow I can’t believe he broke his campaign promises there’s absolutely nothing that could have prepared me for the idea that Donald Trump might be a liar. The lack of critical thinking skills go hand in hand here. Anyway I’m fucking sick of AI but I think we’re cooked as a species either way and the people who would fall for a lot of this are the same people who would fall for Trump’s bullshit, too, so I’m unclear how much sway AI will actually have over these midterms. I just hope that the people with critical thinking skills outvote the ones with none on Tuesday.
Let’s briefly go over the technicalities of what to expect on Tuesday, and some predictions about what I think will come after. First of all, both sides have been mobilizing poll watchers, on both the right and the left, to ensure there isn’t intimidation or fraud happening on polling day. States are the ones with the constitutionally-protected right to determine how elections happen within their borders, so each state has its own rules but all allow some form of poll observation from outside observers. That’s different from the federal government’s ability to send in troops to polling places–that is pretty categorically illegal, Trump cannot send armed troops to polling sites. Instead, in a court filing this week, the Trump administration indicated it would send various federal election monitors not from the FBI or ICE but from random other agencies, like the DEA, the federal bureau of prisons, and the bureau of alcohol, tobacco, firearms, and explosives. The feds claim they’ll be unarmed and trained to follow state and local rules. This stems from a lawsuit brought by the NAACP to try to pre-emptively bar Trump from doing what is already illegal: sending armed personnel to intimidate voters. And state elections officials across the country have been prepping for months for potential federal interference in their elections, including doing tabletop exercises to simulate potential crisis scenarios, like a sudden onslaught of ICE agents at a polling place or the federal seizure of ballots and voting equipment. At the same time, democrats and nonpartisan watchdog groups have been massively organizing their own efforts to ensure the presence of poll watchers at elections across the country, which includes tens of thousands of election monitors. So your polling place might look and feel very different this year than it ever has, and it’s very likely that the election monitoring and threat will continue after the polls close as more conspiracy theories, hoaxes, lies, and potential real threats come to light and the Trump regime attempts to capitalize on them to make claims about rigged elections, faulty voting machines, and loads of undocumented immigrants or dead people voting.
We’ve gotten a brief preview of what that might look like in Trump’s efforts in Alaska and California in recent days. In Alaska, Democrat Mary Peltola is running against Republican Dan Sullivan for a senate seat there. There is another candidate running in the race as an independent and that man is also named Dan Sullivan and looks quite a bit like the Republican Dan Sullivan, a fact that Trump has latched on to to try to argue that if the Republican Dan Sullivan loses by a small margin then the results should be thrown out as clearly confusing for voters. And this week a New York Times report claimed that Democrats and Mary Peltola’s campaign actually recruited the second independent Dan Sullivan, attempting to confuse the race for senate in the state. Mary Peltola has denied any involvement, but the New York Times report has led to new attempts by the Trump regime to invalidate the election in Alaska before it even happens, and they are now threatening potential criminal charges against Peltola and her team. And in California, US attorneys there have issued subpoenas to California election officials claiming that there are 20,000 non-citizens on California’s voter rolls and asking a judge to rule that those ballots cannot be counted until each voter’s citizenship is verified. Those officials have been ordered to appear in court on November 4th, the day after the election, and the DOJ has claimed it is criminally investigating California officials for misconduct. A judge in California has appointed a special master to evaluate the claims about the 20,000 ballots. To bolster their fraud claims, the DOJ has also criminally charged 28 people in California for attempting to vote while not a citizen, lying on voter registration and citizenship applications about their status, and alleging that some actually voted illegally despite not being citizens. Which indicates to me they MAY have some evidence to suggest wrongdoing by 28 people–reminder that in the very rare instance that voter fraud occurs it is almost always due to human error or misunderstanding, not due to some nefarious plot or criminal intent–so they have 28 people they’ve MAYBE been able to find evidence on, and I say maybe because federal prosecutors under Trump have proven willing to bring charges despite having very weak cases, and these people are innocent until proven guilty as the DOJ’s own press release confirms. But the 20,000 noncitizens they separately are claiming have registered to vote, that’s not a criminal case so the burden of proof is lower and they may be making those claims based on zero evidence at all, just to muck up the entire process. Anyone they had actual evidence on was probably named in that separate criminal case against the 28 Californians. For this 20,000 immigrant civil case, they don’t have to provide much evidence up front, just enough to get this special master in to start looking into stuff to claim enough potential fraud to make the dumbest people in their voter base go hey wait a second! That’s what I mean by “muck up.” And something tells me this is just the beginning of the mucking up we’re going to be seeing around these midterms. Please for the love of god go vote, of course it’s not going to solve everything, of course it sucks that there aren’t better candidates, if your political activity starts and ends with voting and then you complain it doesn’t change anything you are part of the problem. You are part of the problem.
I voted early by mail-in ballot. Since I live abroad the process was submitting an application for an absentee ballot to the Minnesota secretary of state. I could choose either having them mail me a copy that I then mail back or email me a copy that I then print out and mail back. I got it emailed, printed it out, I live down the street from a library with a printer, not to brag. It looked just like a regular ballot, I filled in the bubbles, signed the oath thing declaring that I am who I say I am, put it all in an envelope, and paid 4 euros to send it back to America. I was able to confirm on the Minnesota secretary of state’s website that they received my ballot. As of today, according to the UF Election Lab’s tabulation of early voters, nearly 14 million mail in ballots have been accepted, 46% from democrats, 30% from republicans, and 23% from other voters. Total early voting has hit nearly 22 million people, 44% democrats, 31% republicans, and 25% other voters. I note this because one common tactic from Trump and his ilk is to question the legitimacy of mail in ballots because they tend to skew Democrat and so he just has to be like wow if you really think about it its really suspicious that all of the sudden all these last minute democrat votes came in, seems like fraud right? And the dumbest people you’ve ever met are like hey yeah wait a minute.
Here are some races to keep an eye on. The Senate is currently split 53 republicans to 47 democrats, with JD Vance’s tying vote the Democrats would need 51 seats to win a bare majority, so they’d need to add 4 seats. 35 seats are currently up for election in 2026, 13 are held by Democrats and 22 are held by Republicans. In Georgia, Democrat Jon Ossoff is running to keep his seat in the Senate against Republican representative Mike Collins who has only raised about $6.5 million to Ossoff’s 77 million, Ossoff seems favored to win, keeping hold of the seat, not adding another Democrat seat. In Michigan, Abdul El Sayed is running on the Democratic ticket against former representative Mike Rogers. Rogers only narrowly lost the election to Elissa Slotkin in 2024. In Maine, Republican Susan Collins is running to hold onto the Senate seat she’s had since 1996, since I was 4 years old. Graham Platner was originally running against her on the Democrat ticket but dropped out of the race because it turns out he’s a sexual predator, allegedly, so the Maine democrats picked Troy Jackson instead who has since gotten a Bernie Sanders endorsement and is currently neck and neck with Susan Collins in the polls. In North Carolina, former Democratic governor Roy Cooper is running to flip the senate seat blue against Michael Whatley, a former RNC chairman and staunch Trump ally.
In Alaska, Democrat Mary Peltola is running to flip the seat blue against Senator Dan Sullivan. Alaska uses ranked choice voting so if neither candidate receives over 50% of the vote then it could take a while to get results from Alaska. In Iowa, Democrat Josh Turek is running to flip the senate seat blue against Trump-endorsed US representative Ashley Hinson. And in Texas, the last time a Democrat won a senate race was in 1988 and James Talarico is running to flip the senate seat blue against Ken Paxton, who has a ton of scandal and baggage under his belt working in Talarico’s favor and there has been a ton of spending on ads in Texas by Republicans, Democrats, and outside groups as well. And in Ohio, former Senator Sherrod Brown is running against incumbent Republican Jon Husted who was appointed to the Senate to fill the seat left by JD Vance when he assumed the Vice Presidency. Obviously there are other important races happening across the country but those are the Senate ones that observers are watching most closely that could flip the senate blue. In Minnesota Senate candidate Peggy Flanagan is showing a double digit lead over her Republican challenger. If she wins she’d be the first Native American woman to sit on the US Senate.
And over to the US House elections where all 435 seats are up for election. They are currently held by 218 republicans, 214 democrats with 2 vacancies, 218 representatives are needed by one party to win a majority, and there are a TON of districts up in the air right now. In 70 districts, both parties have spent at least six figures on ads in the final days of the election. Republicans are on the defense trying to hold as many seats as they can. Over $10 million dollars has been spent in recent days in districts in Michigan, North Carolina, New York, and Florida. According to the Cook Political Report, Democrats are favored to win 220 seats, there are 17 complete toss ups, and there are 30 seats that are competitive but leaning Republican. Key toss up districts include Michigan’s 4th and 7th districts which include Kalamazoo and Lansing, New York’s 17th district which includes Tarrytown and Peekskill north of the city, Florida’s 22nd district which includes Palm Beach, and North Carolina’s 1st district east of Raleigh. To see if your district is a toss up, you can check out my sources in the description. And if you’re new to voting and don’t understand the process, that’s okay! Check out vote dot gov to find your polling place, learn about who’s on your ballot, and get informed before polls close on Tuesday evening. If you’re voting in person on election day, make a plan–where’s your polling place, when are you going to go? Before work? After work? Just writing it in your calendar and thinking through when you’ll go will help you remember and follow through. It’s a small part of your civic participation that I promise is quite easy and painless. If you have long lines at your polling place, just stay in line. As long as you’re in line when the polls close they have to let you vote. If you have concerns about your ballot or the voting process, not everything is a nefarious conspiracy, and looking for information on social media will potentially lead you astray, so it is always best to talk to an election official about your concerns. It’s not business as usual in the US, everything is bad, but voting is one piece of the larger puzzle and quite literally the least you can do, so please please do show up and vote this Tuesday.
